Full Version: Making Weldables More Widely Used

I really, really, REALLY love weldables, they're probably my favorite part of NS. But because they're "weld and be done with it," they're often not used or dont provide a large boost due to imbalancing possibilities. So, why not allow aliens to interact and 'reverse weld' structures by 'reinfesting them,' simply by holding the use key? It would allow weldable points to play a larger part in the game and further define marine territory and alien territory, and also make the map subtly dynamic to allow the teams to gain advantages depending on who controls what. smile-fix.gif

i like it smile-fix.gif

Maybe if you required that a gorge use it - it's not fair for marines to require a welder yet any alien to do it.

Very nice idea. Especially like only the gorge being able to do it. Maybe he could do it by dropping some kind of chamber to initiate it. This would really help the battlefield reshape as the war waged on.

I was thinking of only letting the gorge do it, but I don't want to 'refine' the idea, I simply want it to be out there for the developers to consider - let aliens tinker with weldables in the opposite direction, so we can add more in and spice up maps.

I agree that a gorge should be able to do it if we are to allow kharaa..

hm.. I see a future in this.. I will add myself to the group with the largest oponion. smile-fix.gif

Gorge should do it using healspray, and get the gestation bar.

Or maybe have a flag in the func_weldables to allow this to happen.

And if you liek weldables, ask the mappers to put more in, and stop taking so many out tounge.gif

Some weldables break when welded though.

Weldables cause a permanent change in the map. Because only marines can trigger weldables, the permanent change is often beneficial to them and hindering to the aliens. If a map contained too many weldables, five minutes into the game marines would hold an advantage over the aliens simply because they welded everything, closing off vents and opening back doors to hives.

With aliens able to reverse-weld the map could contain as many weldables as it desired.

Welds can do all sorts of things:

-close vents
-open doors
-give access to new areas (perhaps raises a piece of equipment; lets you jump into the higher area in the room)
-turn on lights
-open siege locations

Some, like closing vents, could be really useful if they had a short weld time, and the gorge could spit it back open. I think its been done before, though clumsily.

Some, like the Hera door to Archiving, are kinda retarded how you can close them again, imo.
