Full Version: Just A Tip For Playing A Marine

Okay guys, I dont mean to preach, but as a marine, if you get trip mines, REMEMBER this isnt HalfLife Deathmatch man - Not everyone has the same "type" of character, some are smaller than others, AND more agile- - Not only can the skulk.gif Crawl on the walls and ceiling- THEY OFTEN DO! Dont just put a damm tripmine at eye level and thing thats it! Also- apart from placing one ABOVE Eye level- place one BELOW- those dang skulk.gif and pudgy.gif can sqeeze under them easily if they are at eye level! Think like a skulk.gif and you'll kill skulk.gif 's

-Also this isnt a disco club, we dont need lazers EVERYWHERE- Choke points!!! Im sure a lot of you know this, but OMG when I play a asrifle.gif all I see when the commander gives out mines is lines criss crossing the spawn room. Go out with a LMG, 5 mines, and a knife. Possibly a jetpack if your team has RP to spare, BUT DONT demand one- And place them at choke points throughout the map. If you can sneak by the main alien offensive, often times when an alien dies, he RUSHES back to the main group ( like you know on the maps, when the KHarra are winning they always choke up certain points as they seige the marines) and they dont pay attention to things as closely as they would in "enemy" terroritory- and they run right into mines normally they would avoid.

Think like a skulk.gif and kill skulk.gif s

Think like a asrifle.gif and die like a asrifle.gif

Also mines on floor are good biggrin.gif

Just dont jump on the " HMG plz" bandwagon, make due with what you got. Most often when Im playing I see just enemy skulk.gif and gorges, maybe a fade or two and people sit at base DEMANDING shotguns, HMGS, jetpacks. Okay if you can afford them, toss them out, but you dont need an HMG to kill a sulk or gorge. Even fades, grab a buddy- and its EASY

In my experence, Marines can't solo really well- we group. I mean we can solo for a bit and all, but were much more effective in atleast 2 man fireteams, 3-5 preffered.

- Not everyone needs a HMG. Maybe its just from the movie Aliens 2, but I think that 2 HMGs + 1 Gernader and rest LMGs or MAYBE a shotgun is all thats needed. If you play right- you dont all need expensive gear.

Course when you play with people that ignore the fact you dont need HMGS and HVY armor to kill gorges and sulks, you are doomed to an extent.

- DOnt move out alone!! Always travel with atleast 2 people- even in early rushes!

3 LMGs can take an ono

4 LMGS can easily take an ono

TO many this may seem really stupid and all, like everyday crude, but a lotta people dont know it or care about it confused.gif confused.gif

Why isn't it working?

Also don't forget, an exploding mine will take out marines too.

Wow, I have psychic powers over the moderators. Or maybe I just reported the post. tounge.gif

But that's a really good point Moleculor. I hate having someone plaster the base in mines and then a skulk walks in and we all get blown up. Bah.

And remember boys and girls, bigger and more expensive does not necessarily equal better. One of my favorite memories as a Marine is watching an Onos mow down a bunch of slow-moving HMG Marines running for cover, only to die when I gave it a buckshot facelift the moment it got too close. (Remember Kharaa! 'NO MEANS NO!!') wink.gif

Just because the Shotty is one of the first new weapons you get, doesn't mean you should underestimate it. It's great for taking out buildings, for one thing. So next time you're standing in your base surrounded by people screaming for HMGs, ask for a simple Shotgun. You'd be surprised how fast you often get it. biggrin.gif
Colonel_Vera
Light Machine Gun - Unless the enemy is pretty much standing still/ Charging at you head on( which the Kharaa usualy don't do) fire in short bursts to avoid reloading + increase accuracy during a feeding frenzy skulk.gif .

Pistol - Good in the begining as it has much better accuracy then the LMG and does twice the dmg, yet due to it's low ammo/clip its limited as backup weapon mostly.

Knife - When yer destroying a building(non-offensive) and you have someone watching your 6 Use this.

Shotgun -20RP- Beleive it or not- This gun does 160 dmg when you hit themwith all of the pellets. biggrin.gif
Nice spread lets you kill them annoying skulks with little hassle.

Welder -10RP- This handy tool will not only repair friendly structures / armour.... It also destroys buildings fast and is good at killing aliens too as (I think->) it damages health and removes armour.

All in all.. a completley GREAT selection of weapons at the start of the game- bar the fact that shotguns and welders cost some, the first 3 are completely free n Standar issue. So many people are constantly harrasing commander for HEAVY Guns and HEAVY armour --->When they die in the next few seconds and end up wasting all those resources you spent on such costly equipment.

As a marine- If you want the good equipment you should be proficient at using such weapons and have a LOW mortality rate--- If you display a willing and obediant+patient attitude to the Commander you will most likely get what you want and hopefully at least what you need. Try becoming proficient with all the starting weapons so you ont have to depend on spending(or wasting mad.gif ) the team's resources.
Poor_Yurik
The most valid point made here is not to stand around whining over your mike for HMG/armour when the team has thirty-something resources, YOU DON'T HAVE THE TECH (*hint*fricken*HINT*) and the Kharaa haven't even got Fades FFS! I have seen a squad of TEN people standing around whining at our comm to give them all HMG/armour/jets(in a level that has no real verticals/high vents) while the forward base (and myself) were being torn to shreds by an organized kharaa side. I can take out a skulk with five pistol rounds. I can take a Lerk out with a well-placed shottie round. I have sucessfully taken out one with a damn WELDER. And it's true, a clanned, well organized, fourman LMG squad can drop an onos like a bag of ___. SO STOP BITCHING ABOUT NOT HAVING YOUR PRECIOUS HMG/ARMOUR/JETS AND DO SOMETHING! Namely drop some skulk.gif skulk.gif skulk.gif, or even an tiny.gif with an LMG. Trust me, it's easy.

/end rant

What a way to go for an introduction for a new forum... confused.gif

I found myself laying mines in vents for a while early yesterday and I found that you could do it fast as heck with a jetpack. Hold the duck and jump buttons and move foreward and you'll go nearly lightspeed down vents, and for the longer ones this is a godsend -- especially when there's a fade coming in the other end and all you have is a LMG.

Also, vent tip -> put them on the ground only, so they don't have the laser, it's not like they can avoid the mines in such a confined space, so at least they have less of a chance of seeing it.

MY team has just fallen to OMFGHMGPLZCOM syndrom. We have bases in their hives due to a RUSH okay. Enemy all rushes sulk while their gorges built up main base... 3 of us move out to first hive and build up a T-factory, and some turrets and armory + spawn point, and move out for next... We get there and yell we need backup but 1 guy yells " I need HMG first" there nothing but sulk rushes, but we need a few more asrifle.gif asrifle.gif asrifle.gif s to stop sulks while rest of us build up. One guy says " I never leave base til I got atleast a HMG and Hvy armor" Im not commander but the commander says exactly what Im thinking " move out- HMGS versus skulk.gif is a waste!". 2 other n00bs at base say " dude just give them to us" nevermind the fact we dont have nuff resources tho- they sit at base screaming for them... then one by one ppl next to me in hive location say " screw this" and quit game. That leaves me, comm, and like 3 or 4 noobs. noobs start vote to kick commander, and win ( i couldnt vote against it!!!- was kinda busy) commander throws his hands up and quits game, and a noob hops into chair, I die since Im alone now vs like 4 or 5 sulks, and noob yells " WTF they didnt research HMG yet" and he and his buddies quit. Aliens Laugh at me and I get tired and quit too.

Point is, we had 1 hive built on, very defendable, one excellent base and STARTED a good just asrifle.gif asrifle.gif defence against a 2nd hive... Aliens fell syndrome to wanting to build up crap near their main base, forgetting about the other hives. We SHOULD have easily won that game, but it goes to show you what OMFGHMGPLZCOM syndrome can do... very sad. Those with it should seek therapy, either on this forum in the strategy sections, or professional help. Call 1-800-HMG-NOOB for more information- if therpay doesnt help, seek termination for your loved ones ( from this game- just quit... go back to Quake III, cause you dont need big guns to take on little guys here. Its called overkill.

Good posts above, but i just want to make a small addition. LMG's arent my favorite weapons in the beginning, but people seem to forget that weapon hitting power can be upgraded. This is too often over looked. If everyone spawns with weapons that automatically do +10%,+20% or better still +30%. this is cheaper and more effective in the long run that spawning masses of HMG's and GL's. Hell, the HMG slows me down too much and is too inaccurate over long range. I prefer weapons with a little more finesse except in times of utmost need.
TheGunslinger
One clip of the LMG plus one clip of the Pistol will deal 910 points of damage when upgraded, so you if aim... very... carefully...
