Full Version: High Ping kicking/banning, why?

Sometimes at night, late night (midnight-6am) the only servers with people on them are sometimes foreign based servers not in America or a few servers I ping slightly higher too (instead of 50-80, it's around 120-170).

I've seen a lot of servers have some kind of setting or pluggin that kicks people cause they're ping is too high.

Why?

Server resources need low ping players? To help prevent most people from playing against someone who might warp a little due to lag?

I'm not on dialup, though I can imagine how those poor guys must feel trying to play NS. I just think it's a little..weird a server can randomly kick you due to a ping. I mean if you're like me and find yourself often playing NS at 5am, and one of a maybe a couple of servers with people is in Australia where you ping like 275+ it's not really your fault ya know?

Just curious, nothin you can really do on your end sept tweak rates and keep minimal stuff running / no spyware.

I'm with you that these ping kickers are annoying; my college at peak hours will ping me at 600. Yes, 600 ping at a college. Go figure.

While I'd love the removal of the kicker, playing against warpers who can "compensate" for their warping is mad annoying, and the warpers them selvces are annoying. While you and me probably aren't problem players, tehre are players whose lag is unbearable and should be removed from servers.

Pile that on with the fact that everyone thinks that over 100 ping lags the server, you'll get people crying LAG LAGLAGLALGALGALGALGLAGLAALGGLG NOT MY FAULT I SUCK IT WAS LAGS FAULT BAN LAG BAN LAG and whine and whine and whine and whine, and in the end, it's easaier to kick the laggers :-/

I've found it's a combination of people thinking that high pingers somehow lag the whole server, and that a high ping gives you some kind of play advantage.

Very true, the ping myth monster seems to pass on its infection rather rapidly. Admittedly we will kick players on 187 who are warping out of control, i.e the picard manuver. You can ping highly and not warp with tweaked rates. An admin presence is always better than an auto ping kicker imo.

stop playing ns at 5am Maverickk ;>

The rumors of "high pingers slowing the entire server down" are totally based in myth. While limiting pings to 250 or 300ms makes sense, 200ms is pushing it and 150ms is just dumb. Euro players regularly ping less then 200 on US servers (and vice verse). I can only think that it's because they don't want people from the other side of the pond on their server.

On a side note...

You have posted the 100,000th topic on the NS forums, Mav. Congratuations. smile-fix.gif

A few servers I used to play on in both NS and TFC would often kick high pingers not because they have any kind of real advantage, "lag the server" or any of that nonsense but mostly because people above 300+ ping are just plain annoying to hit period due to warping and lagging. Sure they will probably be sucking up to the guy with the single digit kills and not really be a threat to you but occasionally getting clipped by the dude that's lagging like an old man grates on your nerves after you empty more ammo than you should have to kill him everytime he spawns.

most rules and plugins that public servers have in use have no logical reasoning behind them, why should this be an exception. get used to getting treated like ish by idiots
